Downloading eBooks: Nook, Sony, & Other eReaders

This guide provides instructions for downloading eBooks found through IUCAT or Library eBook platforms to multiple devices.

Required software:

On computer: Adobe Digital Editions (see below for instructions on downloading Adobe Digital Editions)

Required hardware:

File transfer cable for eReader (usually USB)

 

Step 1. Downloading eBooks to a dedicated eReader such as Nook, Kobo, or Sony requires the free Adobe Digital Editions software:

1.  Go to Adobe Digital Editions: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/.

2.  Click on the Download Now link to begin downloading Adobe Digital Editions.

3.  Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install Adobe Digital Editions.

4.  Open Adobe Digital Editions.

5.  When prompted, enter the email address and password used to create your Adobe account. (See Getting Started for instructions on creating a free Adobe account.)

6.  Click the Continue button at the bottom of the page.

 

 Step 2: On your computer, find the eBook in either EBSCOhost or ebrary:

1.  Sign into your EBSCOhost or ebrary account (See Getting Started for instructions on creating these free accounts.)

2.  Enter your search terms, or find the eBook you want to download.

3.  Follow directions based on whether you are downloading from ebrary or EBSCOhost below.

 

Step 3a: Downloading ebrary eBooks onto your computer:

1.  Click on Download link displayed above the book you want to check out.  (Please note that a small percentage of the titles available in ebrary are not available for download.)

2.  You can choose to download a section of the book or a specified page range, up to 36 pages (in PDF format).  To download the entire book, choose the third option Download the entire document for 14 days in Adobe Digital Editions format.

3.  Click on OK.

4.  If prompted, choose to open the eBook in Adobe Digital Editions; if nothing happens, make sure you have this program installed as described in Step 1 above.

5.  Adobe Digital Editions will launch and automatically open the eBook. You may continue reading the eBook on your computer or proceed to the next step to transfer it to a dedicated eReader.

6.  In Adobe Digital Editions, change the view to show the list of items you have downloaded by clicking on the icon in the upper-left corner that reads Go to Library View when you hover over it with your mouse pointer.  (The icon looks like a row of books.)

 

Step 4a: Transferring ebrary eBooks onto your eReader:

1.  Wake/turn on and plug your eReader into the computer; if this is the first time connecting it with Adobe Digital Editions, you may be prompted to authorize it with your Adobe account(See Getting Started for instructions on creating a free Adobe account).

2.  Look for the eReader’s icon to be displayed on the left side of the Adobe Digital Editions window; if the icon does not appear, it may be necessary to disconnect and reconnect the device.

3.  Click the All Items option on the left side of the Digital Editions window to display all the books you currently have downloaded.

4.  Kobo users only: Choose your device’s Manage Library option.

5.  Click and hold on the eBook you wish to transfer, then drag and release it onto your eReader’s icon on the left side of the window; the transfer process should only take a few seconds.

6.  Disconnect your eReader from the computer

7.  Please note, the eBook may not be listed on your device with eBooks purchased from retailers; if this is the case, check your eReader’s documents folder.

 

Step 3b: Downloading EBSCOhost eBooks onto your computer:

1.  Click on Download This eBook (Offline) link displayed on the left side of the book you want to check out.  (Please note that a small percentage of the titles available in EBSCOhost are not available for download.)

2.  eBooks can be borrowed for up to 7 days; if you would prefer a shorter check out period, you can change this by using the Checkout Period (in days) field.  Note: Deleting an eBook from your device will not check the book back in for use by others, so be considerate when choosing your checkout time.

3.  Click on the yellow button labeled Checkout & Download from the pop-up box.

4.  If prompted, choose to open the eBook in Adobe Digital Editions; if nothing happens, make sure you have this program installed as described in Step 1 above.

5.  Adobe Digital Editions will launch and automatically open the eBook. You may continue reading the eBook on your computer or proceed to the next step to transfer it to a dedicated eReader.

6.  In Adobe Digital Editions, change the view to show the list of items you have downloaded by clicking on the icon in the upper-left corner that reads Go to Library View when you hover over it with your mouse pointer.  (The icon looks like a row of books.)

 

Step 4b: Transferring EBSCOhost eBooks onto your eReader:

1.  Wake/turn on and connect your eReader to the computer; if this is the first time connecting it with Adobe Digital Editions, you may be prompted to authorize it with your Adobe account(See Getting Started for instructions on creating a free Adobe account).

2.  Look for the eReader’s icon to be displayed on the left side of Adobe Digital Editions; if the icon does not appear, it may be necessary to disconnect and reconnect the device.

3.  Click the All Items option on the left side of Adobe Digital Editions to display all the books you currently have downloaded.

4.  Kobo users only: Choose your device’s Manage Library option.

5.  Click and hold on the eBook you wish to transfer, then drag and release it onto your eReader’s icon on the left side of the window; the transfer process should only take a few seconds.

6.  Unplug your eReader from the computer.

7.  Please note, the eBook many not be listed on your device with eBooks purchased from retailers; if this is the case, check your eReader’s documents folder.
