Information Literacy at IU Southeast: Library Instruction Policy for Fall 2023

Information Literacy Library Instruction

INSTRUCTION REQUEST FORM

updated May 2024

IU Southeast faculty librarians are as enthusiastic and committed as ever to teaching our students the skills and concepts they need to access, locate, use, and evaluate information effectively.

Please see below for an explanation of our policies and procedures for providing information literacy library instruction this semester. You can contact me, Maria Accardi, Coordinator of Instruction, at maccardi@iu.edu with any questions or concerns.

We are looking forward to working with you and your students!

  • For a variety of pedagogical and logistical reasons, the timing of library instruction should be carefully considered. For Fall 2024, Instruction sessions will be available starting Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2024.
  • Library instruction will be provided face-to-face in LB 235 (the library classroom) or online. Online options can be delivered synchronously via Zoom or asynchronously via Canvas modules.
    • In-person library instruction in LB 235 is an interactive, student-centered, outcomes-driven session tailored to specific student needs and course content. Students will be asked to engage in discussion, peer collaboration, and hands-on applications with the librarian as the guide on the side.
    • Online synchronous instruction via Zoom will be similar to a face-to-face instruction session in the library classroom. The online setting means that our teaching strategies might be slightly different than in-person instruction, but every effort will be made to design an engaging session that prioritizes hands-on application.
    • Asynchronous library instruction consists of Canvas modules that address key information literacy concepts and are tailored to student needs and course content.
  • Instruction must be requested through this form linked here. Maria Accardi, the Coordinator of Instruction, is usually able to respond within one business day.
  • Instructors must attend the online or in-person synchronous library instruction session. Please do not schedule a library instruction session for a day that you are unable to be present.
  • Please make sure to introduce your students to their research assignment prior to the instruction session. This will ensure that your students have the chance to ask you questions. This will also ensure that the allotted time can be effectively used by the faculty librarian teaching this session.
  • Sessions must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. These are not generic presentations or demonstrations; we design interactive sessions that emphasize student learning, and we therefore need sufficient time to prepare.
  • We are unable to accommodate instruction requests without sufficient notice.
  • If deemed necessary by staffing or other issues, all instruction might pivot to online only. Maria will communicate this to instructors if it is necessary to make this shift.

About our Program

The Library Instruction Program at Indiana University Southeast seeks to support the educational programs of the University by providing effective, relevant, student-centered instructional services.  Through our instructional services, the Library also seeks to support the successful integration of Information Literacy--one of the University's General Education Goals and Outcomes--into the University curriculum.

The mission of the IU Southeast Information Literacy Library Instruction program is to empower student success through development of information literacy skills and abilities that enable students to:

  • find information to address an information need

  • critically evaluate that information for credibility and relevance

  • actively participate in and contribute to information landscapes of academia, personal life, the workforce, and beyond

  • solve problems and respond to challenges in personal and global settings

We strive to consistently deliver high quality instructional services.  Please feel free to contact Maria Accardi,  Coordinator of Instruction and Assessment, and you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns about our instruction program.
