Floyd County, Indiana is located in southern Indiana along the Ohio River. It was established as a county on February 1, 1819, with land from Clark and Harrison Counties. The County seat of Floyd County is New Albany, Indiana, a city founded in July 1813 by three Scribner brothers.
This LibGuide includes images of artifacts from Floyd County Cultural Heritage institutions:
Q: How do you make a 3D model of a historic artifact?
The 3D models for this project were made through scanning or through photogrammetry. Both processes involve taking multiple (hundreds or thousands) of photographs of each artifact from as close to 360 degrees as we can manage. Computer software helps create geometric models of each artifact. These images consist of thousands of geometric shapes that are knitted together to create a 3D model to represent the artifact. These 3D models can also be made printable on a 3D printer, so that you can hold an artifact in your hand.
Watch this video that the Carnegie Center for Art & History created with our photogrammetrers explaining the process.
This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Indiana State Library. It was a recipient of a 2017 LSTA Indiana Memory Digitization Grant. This project is also supported by a 2018 grant from the Center for Cultural Resources and a 2018 Regional Research and Creativity Grant from the Indiana University Southeast Research & Grants Committee.
These images are also hosted at Indiana Memory, our State's digital library.
"Indiana Memory is a collaborative effort to provide access to the wealth of primary sources in Indiana libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural institutions. It is a gateway to Indiana's history and culture found in digitized books, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, maps, and other media. As a portal to the collections, Indiana Memory assists individuals to locate materials relevant to their interests and to better appreciate the connections between those materials."
Photogrammetry processing using Photoscan was performed on Karst, one of Indiana University's supercomputers:
