Happy Summer!

The Library wants to share some exciting opportunities to get you and your families involved this summer. We are once again partnering with the Floyd County Library to provide a Summer Reading Program where you and your family members can earn prizes, as well as participate in many fun-filled events and activities. All IU Southeast faculty, staff, and community members can participate!

Here’s a snapshot:

Galactic Adventures: 2024 Summer Reading Program & Cultural Pass
(For ALL Ages, Children to Adult)

This year’s Summer Reading Program, ‘Galactic Adventures,’ is a great way for readers of all ages (children and adults) to read and earn amazing prizes.

  • Level 1 Prize (5 hours): Sports Water Bottle
  • Level 2 and Up Prizes: Earn vinyl stickers to decorate your water bottle for every 2 additional hours of reading logged, plus tickets for the grand prize drawings!

You can sign up, log your reading hours, and retrieve your prizes at the IU Southeast Library Service Desk or one of the other two FCL branches.

2024 Cultural Pass Program (Under 21)

All youth 21 and under can also sign up for the 2024 Cultural Pass. The 2024 Cultural Pass provides free access to over 40 arts and cultural institutions in the Greater Louisville Area, including the Louisville Zoo and Kentucky Science Center. It is presented in partnership with Metro Louisville, the Louisville Free Public Library, Arts & Culture Alliance, and the Fund for the Arts. Children and young adults up to age 21 are eligible, and Cultural Pass holders 15 years old and younger can bring one accompanying adult for free!

Pick up a Cultural Pass at the IU Southeast Library Service Desk or one of the other two FCL branches.

Summer Programming Events

  • June 12, 2:00 – 3:00pm (IU Southeast Library): Galactic Adventure Journal – Kids and families can join us to kick off their summer by getting free Galactic Adventure journals, decorating them, and brainstorming what to write this summer!
  • June 12, 6:00 – 7:00pm (IU Southeast Library): Reading the Rainbow – Join us to discuss an LGBTQ+ themed book each month with leader Christopher Proctor, IU Southeast Librarian. This discussion is open to all adults; members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies are welcome. This month’s book is Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree. We encourage everyone to attend, even if you can’t read/finish the book. Always a great discussion!
  • June 26, 2:00 – 3:00pm (IU Southeast Library): Pride Family Party – June is Pride Month! Bring the whole family for a party full of rainbows, stories and fun! We will be celebrating Pride Month with this family event. We will enjoy inclusive stories, songs, rhymes, and a Pride craft.
  • July 2, 6:00 – 7:00pm (FCL Central Branch or online): Dusting Off the Classics Book Group with facilitator Christopher Proctor – This month we're reading Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather.
  • July 10, 2:00 – 3:00pm (IU Southeast Library): Kids’ Maker Hour – This month we will be learning a little about African culture and then we will make our own rainsticks. Who knows what the summer may bring, so we need to be prepared to “make it rain.”
