Population: 33.7 million people live in Peru

Capital: Lima with around 9.7 million inhabitants

Name: República del Perú (Republic of Peru)

Government: Unitary semi-presidential constitutional republic

Language: Spanish, Quechua, Aymara (official languages)

Literacy: Around 94% of the population is literate

Religion: Mainly Christian (81% Roman Catholic, 15% Protestant)

Currency: Sol (PEN), 1 PEN = centimos

National Symbols: Red and white (national colors), vicuna (national animal), cantuta (national flower)

National Anthem: "Somos libres, seamoslo siempre" (We are free, let us be so forever)

National Day: July 28 (Independence Day)

History: The region was home to ancient cultures like the Incas before Spanish colonization in the 16th  century. Peru proclaimed independence in 1821 after the Peruvian War of Independence. The current president is Dina Boluarte, who took office in 2022.
